Job Summary

Ammo shortages hit when people need it most. AmmoSquared is building America's Ammunition Reserve so our members are always stocked and ready. We're looking for a full-stack engineer who loves untangling real problems, owns them through to production, and wants their work to matter.

You'll join a small, tight-knit engineering team and report to the Head of Technology. You'll work across a mature Ruby on Rails platform, from member-facing pages to billing, and background jobs side by side with our product, operations and support teams. No handoffs: we find the problem together, fix it right, and make sure it stays fixed.

Responsibilities

What You'll Work On

AmmoSquared looks simple from the outside: members pick their calibers, pay monthly, and their ammo builds up in a reserve until they ask us to ship it. Behind that is a full platform that runs a national ammunition reserve, and you'll work across all of it.

  • Payments and subscriptions. Recurring billing for tens of thousands of members, which means renewals, retries, card updates and recovering failed payments without losing good customers.
  • Inventory and the reserve. Every round a member pays for is allocated to their personal plan and stored until they want it. You'll help keep that ledger accurate across calibers, warehouses and millions of rounds, on our way to a billion.
  • Logistics and shipping. We ship from warehouses in Idaho and Texas. That means carrier rate shopping, state-by-state compliance, address and age checks, and getting heavy boxes to the right door at the right cost.
  • Infrastructure. We run our own infrastructure alongside edge services, so you'll care about uptime, performance, background jobs, observability and keeping things simple enough to sleep at night.
  • Internal tools. Our support, operations and warehouse teams depend on the tools we build. A good tool or a smarter workflow can save hours every day for the people closest to our members.

You won't be confined to one corner. Most problems here touch two or three of these areas at once, so you'll pick up the whole system and help decide what to build next, not just how to build it.

By day 10 you'll be shipping small fixes to production with the test suite green. By day 90 you'll own a project end to end.

How We Work

We're the team that powers America's Ammunition Reserve, and every fix we ship helps end shortages for our members. That keeps us mission oriented and performance driven.

We keep it simple and skip complexity that doesn't earn its keep. We'd rather prevent a problem than heroically fix it later, so we care about tests, readable code, and systems that hold up as we grow.

We build as a team. We pair on hard problems, review each other's work, and treat feedback as a gift, not a gate. We ship in small, reviewable pull requests tied to clear issues. When we have a question, we go straight to the source: a teammate, the support rep who heard the complaint, or the ops lead on the warehouse floor. We'd rather over-communicate than leave anyone guessing.

Qualifications

Who You Are

  • A problem solver first. You turn a vague problem into a clear goal, scope and acceptance criteria. You check the logs and the data before you guess.
  • A teammate who makes the team better. You collaborate naturally across product, ops and support, pair when it helps, give thoughtful reviews and take feedback well. You write clearly, explain trade-offs in plain English, and go direct to the person with the answer instead of guessing.
  • An owner. You're self-reliant and proactive. When something breaks, you own it and fix it, no excuses.
  • A craftsman. You care about maintainability and scale. You think about idempotency, retries and double charges by default, because members' money is on the line.
  • AI-amplified, not AI-dependent. You use AI tools daily to read unfamiliar code, draft specs and tests, and get more done. You own every line you merge: you can explain it, you've run it, and tests prove it works. You verify AI's claims against the docs and keep customer data out of prompts. Expect us to ask about a time the AI got it wrong.
  • Must love guns and shooting them

Tech Skills

Must have

  • Ruby on Rails: our core stack and strongly preferred (ActiveRecord, migrations on large tables, background jobs such as Sidekiq). Strong engineers from other dynamic-language frameworks who will go deep in Rails should still apply.
  • Payments and subscriptions: recurring billing, dunning, webhooks, idempotent processing, reconciliation
  • SQL (PostgreSQL or similar), including writing your own analytics queries
  • Automated testing (unit, request and end-to-end) and CI discipline
  • JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML and CSS for admin and member-facing pages
  • Git fluency and a habit of small pull requests and thorough code review
  • API and webhook design and debugging (signatures, retries, ordering)

Nice to have

  • Subscription billing platforms, payment gateways and card retry rules
  • Event-driven lifecycle email; CDN/edge configuration (e.g., Cloudflare Workers)
  • Containers, Kubernetes, observability (Sentry, logs) and Redis
  • BI dashboards; e-commerce, shipping integrations or regulated goods

Bonus

  • You’re a builder at heart: You have personal projects (e.g., on GitHub) that showcase your passion for software development and problem-solving OR you've made demonstrable and meaningful contributions to open-source projects.
  • You have experience with modern CI/CD and production operational practices.
  • You reside within commuting distance of Nampa, ID or Buda, TX to support our flexible hybrid (in-office + remote) work style.
