Summary Of Position

Reporting to the Director of Software Engineering, the Senior Software Engineer owns a system or subsystem within Verisma’s enterprise application and is accountable for its architecture, quality, and operational health. Given a business goal, this individual defines the problem, selects the approach, and leads the work to completion — frequently across several engineers. The Senior Software Engineer sets technical standards on the team and develops the engineers around them. The ideal candidate is a full-stack developer with deep expertise in React, C#, and SQL Server who has carried production systems in a regulated environment and has established sound AI-assisted development practice.

Scope

A system or subsystem, with decisions that reach adjacent teams. Given a goal rather than a specification, the Senior Software Engineer defines the problem and the approach and is accountable for the long-term maintainability of what they own.

Hands-on technical work: approximately 75% of time, including writing code, code review, design review, and technical documentation. The remainder is design, technical planning, and mentorship.

Supervisory responsibility: None. Provides technical direction and mentorship without formal reporting authority.

Duties & Responsibilities

Technical Ownership

  • Take technical ownership of core components of the enterprise application, with a long-term vision for scalability and maintainability
  • Translate business goals into technical designs, identifying constraints and trade-offs and documenting decisions for the team
  • Lead multi-person technical efforts from design through delivery, anticipating and removing risk before it reaches production
  • Design, develop and enhance features using React (TypeScript) on the front end and C#/.NET on the back end
  • Optimize and maintain SQL Server databases, including schema design, performance tuning and data integrity
  • Lead efforts to refactor legacy codebases into modern, modular architectures using cloud-native best practices
  • Implement and automate unit and integration testing strategies to ensure code quality and reliability
  • Establish and uphold technical standards within the team, including code review expectations, secure coding practices, and PHI-handling requirements
  • Participate in on-call rotation and lead resolution of production issues within the owned system
  • Design and evolve event-driven integrations between services, selecting the appropriate messaging pattern for the problem — publish/subscribe, queue-based work distribution, or event sourcing — and defining event contracts, versioning, and delivery guarantees
  • Ensure asynchronous workflows fail safely, accounting for duplicate and out-of-order delivery, poison messages, dead-lettering, and eventual consistency in ways that preserve data integrity and the auditability of PHI

AI-Native Engineering Practice

  • Establish AI usage patterns within the owned system area, including where AI-generated artifacts require additional verification before merge
  • Identify the architectural and security failure modes that AI-generated code reliably introduces, and design review practice that catches them as pull request volume rises
  • Decompose work into units that AI-assisted workflows handle well, and recognize the work that should not be delegated to them
  • Maintain specifications, tests, and architectural documentation at a quality that makes AI-assisted development effective rather than error-prone
  • Ensure AI tool usage within the owned area complies with PHI handling, approved-tool, and audit requirements

Collaboration & Development

  • Collaborate closely with internal employees, contractors and DevOps teams to align development efforts with business goals
  • Utilize Azure DevOps for source control (Repos), CI/CD (Pipelines) and work tracking (Boards)
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies and contribute to continuous improvement of team processes
  • Mentor junior developers and contribute to a culture of technical excellence and innovation
  • Perform other related duties, as assigned, to support the effective operation of the department and the company
  • Live by and promote Verisma Core Values

Success In This Role

  • Within 6 months: owning a defined system area, with design decisions documented and the team’s approach to it visibly consistent
  • Within 12 months: leading cross-team technical efforts, and measurably raising the capability of the engineers mentored

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience required
  • 6+ years of professional software development experience, including full-stack and cloud-native development, with demonstrated ownership of a production system
  • Proficiency in:
  • C#/.NET for backend development
  • React with TypeScript and Redux for frontend development
  • SQL Server (T-SQL, schema design, stored procedures)
  • Azure (App Services, containers, horizontal scaling, message queues)
  • Demonstrated ability to review AI-generated code critically, able to describe specific instances where generated output was rejected and the reasoning behind it
  • Experience establishing AI-assisted development practice within a system area, including verification standards and review expectations
  • Experience with Azure DevOps (Repos, Pipelines, Boards) required; Microsoft Power BI Embedded a plus
  • Proven ability to write meaningful, automated unit and integration tests using frameworks like xUnit, Moq or similar
  • Deep working knowledge of secure coding practices aligned with OWASP Top 10
  • Solid understanding of software architecture principles, including microservices and SPA design
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers and raise technical standards across a team
  • Experience in the healthcare industry or other regulated environments preferred
  • Experience working in Agile frameworks such as Scrum or Kanban
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work across departments and with external partners
  • Self-starter with a proactive mindset and a passion for continuous learning and improvement
  • Open to travel up to 10% of the time
