Help build the future of retail negotiation

Retailers make thousands of high-stakes decisions about what earns a place on their shelves, how products are valued and how retailers and suppliers build plans they can stand behind. Yet much of that work still lives in disconnected spreadsheets, presentations, email and institutional knowledge.

Conlego built Portager to change that.

Portager brings structure, intelligence and AI-assisted insight to assortment, vendor proposal and negotiation decisions. It supports thousands of deals representing billions of dollars in product value, so teams spend less time reconciling information and more time making decisions with confidence.

AI is already meaningfully integrated throughout Portager, helping uncover insights and support customer decisions. We are already trusted with high-value, business-critical decisions, but we believe the most interesting version is still ahead of us.

The opportunity

You won’t be limited to executing a predefined backlog. You’ll work with Product, customer-facing teams and Engineering leadership to shape both the problem and the solution.

You’ll join a small, experienced engineering team where your judgment matters. This is a hands-on individual-contributor role. We’re looking for someone with a strong technical perspective on React who can help the team make better decisions about architecture, testing, performance and user experience. You’ll join a team that believes software development is more than producing code; it's a discipline. It's a way of turning hard problems into something clear, useful and lasting.

This is a front-end-leaning full-stack role. Much of your work will centre on building sophisticated product experiences using React, Next.js, TypeScript, JavaScript, HTML and CSS. You’ll also work confidently across APIs and the broader application stack.

You’ll have the autonomy to improve tooling, reduce unnecessary complexity and raise the quality of the product experience. This is end-to-end ownership: from understanding the problem and choosing an approach through delivery, production operation and continuous improvement.

How we build matters

We care deeply about the quality of our software and the decisions behind it. That means applying sound judgment: knowing where quality matters most, where complexity is justified and when the simplest solution is the strongest one.

We value clear design, thoughtful naming, useful abstractions, effective testing and systems that can be understood and confidently extended by people other than their original authors.

We move quickly, but deliberately. We care about outcomes more than output and would rather solve the right problem well than produce work that creates little lasting value.

How we think about AI

AI is important to Conlego and it plays an increasingly significant role in Portager. But, it is a tool - not a substitute for product understanding, critical thinking or engineering accountability.

We use AI to shorten feedback loops, improve development workflows and create capabilities that were previously difficult or impossible. We expect developers to understand what they are building, evaluate generated work critically and take responsibility for the result.

What you’ll do

  • Build exceptional React and Next.js experiences
  • Build sophisticated, production-quality applications using React, Next.js and TypeScript
  • Help evolve Portager’s front-end architecture as the product grows
  • Make sound decisions about caching, rendering, error handling and application structure
  • Create reusable components, hooks and interaction patterns for complex, information-dense retail workflows
  • Improve accessibility, usability, test coverage and front-end performance through practical measurement and iteration

Own what you build

  • Take meaningful features from discovery through development, release and production operation
  • Break complex work into practical increments while communicating risks, tradeoffs and dependencies early
  • Improve the performance, reliability, observability and maintainability of the areas you touch

Strengthen the team

  • Write clear, expressive and maintainable code that others can confidently build upon
  • Contribute thoughtful code reviews and practical mentorship that help other developers improve
  • Identify technical debt and propose tools, patterns or improvements when they solve a real problem

What you bring

  • Five or more years of professional software development experience, or equivalent demonstrated capability
  • Deep, hands-on React experience building and operating substantial production applications
  • Strong experience building production applications with Next.js
  • Strong experience building production services with Node.js
  • Strong TypeScript skills across front-end and backend application development
  • Strong knowledge of modern HTML, CSS, responsive design and accessibility
  • A strong understanding of React component design, hooks, composition, rendering behaviour and the application lifecycle
  • Experience with reusable component systems, application state, asynchronous data, API integration and complex client-side workflows
  • Experience testing React applications at the component, integration and end-to-end levels
  • You don't need prior experience in retail negotiation. You do need the curiosity to understand the business, the customer and why the software matters.

What success looks like here

  • You take ownership, create momentum and turn ambiguous problems into clear plans without waiting for every step to be prescribed
  • Portager’s user experience becomes more consistent, responsive, intuitive and polished because of your work
  • The areas you touch become easier to test, maintain and extend
  • You balance speed, quality and long-term maintainability while remaining focused on customer and product outcomes
  • Your judgment, communication, code reviews and mentorship make the engineering team more effective
