Gaia Ecology is a young and ambitious ecological research and consultancy startup. Our team consists of ecologists and developers who believe that nature deserves its own space—even in the middle of urban expansion. We build tools and deliver services to help our clients make responsible decisions with biodiversity in mind. From large infrastructure projects to local field research, we combine ecology and technology to create smart, scalable solutions.

Right now, we’re looking for a medior software engineer to join our team in taking our technical projects to the next level.

What will you be doing?

Gaia’s team of developers has been building a digital tool to support fieldwork, data reporting, and interaction with clients. As a software engineer your main task is delivering new features and improvements. Our codebase has gone over a full rewrite over the past months and is very clean. No fixing up old legacy crap!

You’ll be helping build meaningful features across our web platform and app, adhering to clean code, solid principles, TTD and other good engineering practices. You’ll work with and be mentored by the CTO and Lead Senior Developers on complicated architecture problems and take part in technical sparring to develop effective solutions. You are an independent worker, work well in a fast moving startup environment and communicate well in a multidisciplinary team.

You must be familiar and comfortable with the following tech stack:

• Languages & Frameworks: JavaScript, Node.js, TypeScript, React
• Databases: PostgreSQL
• Testing: TDD, unit testing
• APIs: GraphQL, Apollo

Bonus experience that will help you stand out:

• Mobile development (Native Android, iOS, Kotlin Swift)
• Other languages and frameworks like Java, C#, Python
• Personal projects or open-source contributions
• DevOps

What do we expect from you?

• You have at least 3-5 years of professional software development experience
• You know how to break down complex tasks and collaborate with the team
• You speak and write fluent English. Dutch knowledge is a plus
• You must be comfortable commuting to our office in Amsterdam West
