About Swap Street
Swap Street is a fashion resale and swap marketplace app. We are live on Android with real users, and currently in Apple review for iOS. We recently completed development through an external agency and are now bringing engineering in-house, this role is the first and most important hire in that transition, with real ownership and equity to match.
The role
We need a Technical Lead who can take full ownership of our existing codebase, judge what's worth keeping versus rebuilding, and lead engineering as we grow our first internal team. You'll be the technical decision-maker for the company, working directly with the founder on priorities.
This is a hands-on coding role, not a pure management position — expect to spend most of your time in the codebase, especially in the first few months.
What you'll do
Take handover of the existing mobile app (Android live, iOS in review) and backend from our agency, and do an honest technical audit of what's there
Fix critical bugs and stabilize the app for our live Android user base
Own the iOS launch process, including resolving any Apple review issues
Make architecture decisions: what to keep, what to refactor, what to rebuild
Set up proper engineering practices — code review, CI/CD, monitoring, backups — where they don't already exist
Hire and mentor the next engineers as the team grows (backend engineer and QA/support are next in line)
Work directly with the founder on product priorities and roadmap
What we're looking for
5+ years professional software engineering experience, including mobile (Android required; iOS a strong plus)
Experience with backend systems: APIs, databases, authentication, payments integration
Comfortable auditing and taking over someone else's codebase without complete documentation
Strong written English — most of our communication will be async
Startup or small-team experience, where you've had to make calls without a big team around you
Bonus: experience with marketplace, e-commerce, or social apps (listings, chat, matching/discovery features)
Bonus: experience managing or mentoring junior engineers
