About The Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and passionate Machine Learning Engineer to join our Smart Agents team within GM’s Autonomous Vehicles division. The successful candidate will be instrumental in developing sophisticated ML and Reinforcement Learning models that simulate realistic road user behaviors for autonomous vehicle testing and training. Your work will involve building scalable, efficient, and fault-tolerant systems that support the creation of dynamic scenarios involving vehicles, bikers, pedestrians, and other road users. Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams such as Perception, Behavior, and Safety Engineers, you will contribute to advancing GM’s autonomous driving capabilities, particularly in simulation environments that mimic real-world complexities. This role offers an exciting opportunity to influence the future of self-driving technology and contribute to safer, smarter transportation solutions.

Qualifications

  • 4+ years of experience in robotics, autonomous systems, or latency-sensitive backend services
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as modern C++ and Python
  • Hands-on experience with machine learning frameworks like TensorFlow or PyTorch
  • Strong background in developing and deploying ML models, especially in perception, prediction, or autonomous vehicle contexts
  • Experience with building high-performance ML and system pipelines
  • Knowledge of profiling CPU/GPU software, process scheduling, and system optimization
  • Familiarity with reinforcement learning, sequence prediction, and simulation environments
  • Ability to design scalable, fault-tolerant architectures that are easily extensible
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to investigate complex technical areas and understand systems outside your core domain
  • Proven track record of deploying perception, prediction, or autonomous vehicle models into real-world environments

Responsibilities

  • Support the development of ML and RL models for simulating realistic road user interactions in autonomous vehicle testing environments
  • Create and optimize training loops, streamlining model development and deployment processes
  • Build and maintain robust ML infrastructure, including data pipelines, metrics, and deployment frameworks for rapid experimentation and production
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate models into simulation systems and autonomous vehicle platforms
  • Contribute to the design of scalable and fault-tolerant system architectures that support continuous improvement and flexibility
  • Profile and optimize CPU/GPU software to enhance performance and efficiency of ML models and pipelines
  • Participate in technical strategy discussions, code reviews, and mentorship to foster best practices within the team
  • Stay updated on emerging AI/ML technologies and incorporate innovative approaches into projects
  • Work closely with Safety and Perception teams to ensure models meet safety and reliability standards for real-world deployment
