About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled and passionate Software Engineer to join Ford’s Research and Advanced Engineering team. In this role, you will be instrumental in designing and developing cloud platforms and microservices that power connected vehicles and facilitate over-the-air (OTA) software updates. Your work will directly influence the safety, capability, and driving experience of millions of Ford and Lincoln vehicles worldwide. The position offers a unique opportunity for a builder-minded professional to take full ownership of their technical contributions, from initial development to deployment and scaling. You will work within a collaborative, balanced product team that values software craftsmanship, continuous learning, and innovation. The role also emphasizes DevOps and Infrastructure-as-Code, giving you the autonomy to design, build, and manage scalable, secure, and reliable backend services on cloud platforms.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, along with a minimum of six years of professional experience in software development. You should have extensive hands-on experience with Java (Java 8/11/17+), including developing scalable backend services using the Spring Boot ecosystem. Strong proficiency in designing RESTful APIs and microservices architectures is essential. You should also have a solid understanding of PostgreSQL, including schema design, query optimization, and performance tuning. Experience with frontend frameworks such as Angular or React is highly desirable, especially for building responsive and user-friendly web interfaces. Additional qualifications include experience deploying cloud-native applications on Google Cloud Platform (GCP), automating CI/CD pipelines, and managing containerized applications with Docker and Kubernetes. Certifications such as Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect or Engineer are a plus. A demonstrated ability to mentor junior team members and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams is also valued.
Responsibilities
Your primary responsibilities will include designing, developing, and maintaining highly scalable and secure backend services utilizing Java and Spring Boot. You will architect and implement robust RESTful APIs and microservices optimized for high availability and low latency, ensuring seamless integration with vehicle systems and cloud platforms. You will develop complex business logic, data models, and database schemas in PostgreSQL, ensuring optimal performance. Writing clean, maintainable, and well-documented code is fundamental, complemented by rigorous code reviews, unit testing, and technical documentation to uphold engineering excellence.
In addition, you will deploy and manage cloud-native applications on GCP, adhering to best practices for security, reliability, and scalability. Building and maintaining automated CI/CD pipelines using tools like Cloud Build, GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or GitLab CI will be part of your routine. You will package applications with Docker and orchestrate their deployment using Kubernetes (GKE). Automating environment provisioning and configuration management with Terraform or GCP Cloud Deployment Manager will ensure consistent and efficient operations.
Monitoring system health through proactive logging, tracing, and alerting with Cloud Monitoring, Prometheus, or Grafana is essential for rapid issue resolution. As a mentor, you will guide junior developers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and engineering excellence. Collaborating closely with Product Managers, UX/UI designers, and architects, you will translate business requirements into high-performing technical solutions. You will actively participate in Agile ceremonies, including sprint planning, stand-ups, backlog refinement, and retrospectives, ensuring iterative progress and team alignment.
