As part of the continued development of Peston Tech, we are looking for a skilled, innovative and results-driven Software Engineer to join our growing technology team.

Role Overview

This is a full-time, on-site position based in Dar es Salaam.

The Software Engineer will be responsible for designing, coding, developing, testing, deploying and maintaining software applications and digital systems for Peston Tech clients and Peston Group companies.

The successful candidate should be a hands-on Software Engineer with strong coding capabilities who can understand business requirements and transform them into functional, secure, scalable and commercially viable technology solutions.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, code, develop, test, deploy and maintain software applications and systems.

• Develop full-stack web applications and business management systems.

• Develop modern, responsive and secure corporate web platforms.

• Develop front-end and back-end components of software applications.

• Design, develop and manage databases.

• Develop and integrate APIs and third-party services.

• Develop authentication, authorization and user-management systems.

• Integrate payment gateways, mobile money, messaging services and other external platforms where required.

• Participate in the development and customization of ERP, CRM and other enterprise/business systems.

• Analyze business and client requirements and translate them into technical specifications and working software.

• Troubleshoot, debug, maintain and improve existing applications and systems.

• Apply appropriate cybersecurity, application-security and data-protection practices during development.

• Use Git/GitHub or equivalent version-control systems.

• Deploy and maintain applications on cloud, VPS and other hosting environments.

• Conduct software testing and support quality assurance before deployment.

• Prepare appropriate technical documentation for developed systems and applications.

• Work with Business Development teams to assess technical requirements for prospective clients.

• Provide technical input during preparation of software proposals, project requirements and client presentations.

• Support internal technology and digital-transformation projects across Peston Group companies.

• Participate in Research & Development (R&D) of new technologies, software products and digital solutions.

• Research emerging technologies and recommend practical solutions with commercial potential for Peston Tech.

• Contribute to the development of technology products and solutions that can be commercialized by Peston Tech.

Qualifications & Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology or a closely related field.

• Minimum two (2) years of practical professional experience in software engineering or software development.

• Strong practical experience in full-stack software development.

• Strong coding and programming capabilities.

• Demonstrable experience developing real-world software projects is required.

• Candidates must be able to demonstrate software applications, systems or technology solutions they have personally developed or substantially contributed to.

• Strong knowledge of programming languages and frameworks used in modern software development.

• Experience with front-end technologies such as JavaScript/TypeScript, React, Next.js, Vue.js or equivalent technologies.

• Experience with back-end technologies such as Node.js, Python/Django/FastAPI, PHP/Laravel, Java, .NET or equivalent technologies.

• Strong understanding of SQL databases, including PostgreSQL, MySQL or equivalent technologies.

• Experience developing and integrating REST APIs and third-party services.

• Good understanding of software architecture, data structures and software-development principles.

• Experience using Git/GitHub, GitLab or equivalent version-control platforms.

• Experience deploying software applications into production environments.

• Understanding of cloud infrastructure, VPS environments, domains, hosting and application deployment.

• Good understanding of authentication, authorization, application security and data protection.

• Ability to troubleshoot, debug, test and optimize software applications.

• Understanding of responsive application design and UI/UX principles.

• Experience developing ERP, CRM, business management systems or enterprise applications will be an added advantage.

• Experience with Odoo development, implementation or customization will be a strong added advantage.

• Experience developing mobile applications for Android and/or iOS will be an added advantage.

• Experience with payment gateway, mobile money and other API integrations will be an added advantage.

• Knowledge of cloud platforms and DevOps practices will be an added advantage.

• Familiarity with modern AI-assisted software development tools will be an added advantage, but is not a mandatory requirement.

• Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.

• Ability to understand business processes and translate them into technology solutions.

• Ability to manage development assignments from requirements gathering through development, testing, deployment and maintenance.

• Ability to work independently and as part of a technology/project team.

• Strong communication skills and ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical clients and colleagues.

• Ability to work under deadlines and manage multiple development requirements.

• Strong interest in innovation, emerging technologies and Research & Development.

What We Are Looking For

We are looking for a practical Software Engineer who can actually design, code and build working software, rather than an applicant whose experience is primarily general IT support, computer maintenance or networking.

Academic qualifications and knowledge of programming languages alone will not be sufficient.

The ideal candidate should be capable of understanding a business problem, designing an appropriate technical solution and taking that solution through coding, testing, deployment, maintenance and continuous improvement.

Shortlisted candidates should be prepared to demonstrate:

• Software applications or systems they have personally developed or substantially contributed to.

• Their specific technical contribution to previous software projects.

• At least 2–3 significant software projects, where applicable.

• GitHub, GitLab or other code repositories, where available.

• Live applications, websites, systems or software products they have developed, where available.

• Programming languages, frameworks and technologies they are proficient in.

• Database and API development experience.

• System architecture and technical decisions made on previous projects.

• Examples of complex technical problems encountered and how they solved them.

• Experience taking software projects from requirements gathering through development and deployment.
