About The Role

The Senior Developer role is a key position within the Digital Services team, which is part of the Change and Technology Services division. This team is responsible for supporting and maintaining enterprise applications that are vital to the Service’s operations. The primary focus of this role is to contribute to the ongoing modernisation of digital services by designing, developing, and maintaining secure, accessible, and scalable applications using C# and .NET technologies. The successful candidate will play an instrumental role in transitioning away from legacy systems towards a more sustainable, cloud-based infrastructure, primarily leveraging Microsoft Azure. This is a permanent position offering a competitive salary, comprehensive civil service benefits, and flexible working arrangements, including hybrid working from multiple UK locations.

The role provides a unique opportunity to influence technical strategies, improve existing digital services, and contribute to a more efficient and user-centred technology environment. The Senior Developer will work closely with cross-functional teams, participate in architectural discussions, and support the delivery of high-quality software solutions that meet the needs of diverse stakeholders. Additionally, the role involves supporting live services through incident management, deployments, and continuous improvement initiatives, ensuring the stability and performance of critical digital platforms.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in software development, with proven experience in C# and .NET frameworks within modern web application environments. Essential qualifications include familiarity with contemporary engineering practices such as Test-Driven Development (TDD), Behaviour-Driven Development (BDD), automated testing, and DevOps principles including Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment (CI/CD). Knowledge of cloud-based IaaS and PaaS solutions, particularly Microsoft Azure services, is also required. Candidates should demonstrate excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, along with the ability to communicate effectively and collaborate within a team setting.

Desirable qualifications include experience with Azure services such as Azure SQL, Cosmos DB, App Services, and Function Apps, as well as a solid understanding of software architecture principles like SOLID, RESTful API design, and clean architecture. Familiarity with GOV.UK standards, including the Service Manual and Technology Code of Practice, will be advantageous, along with experience working with GitHub-based development workflows.

Responsibilities

The Senior Developer will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining secure and maintainable applications that support enterprise digital services. This includes delivering functionalities aligned with user stories, acceptance criteria, and Agile delivery methodologies. The role requires taking ownership of code quality through automated testing, peer reviews, and addressing technical debt to ensure high standards of software quality.

The candidate will contribute to architectural discussions, help establish engineering standards, and promote reusable components and best practices across the development team. Supporting live services is also a key aspect of the role, which involves incident resolution, managing deployments and releases, documenting processes, and identifying opportunities for continuous improvement. The Senior Developer will support and mentor colleagues, share technical knowledge, and contribute to a collaborative environment focused on delivering innovative digital solutions.
