About The Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Lead Software Engineer to join our team. In this individual contributor leadership role, you will be responsible for designing, building, and scaling next-generation agentic AI systems and advanced solutions aimed at improving healthcare delivery and operational efficiency. You will operate as a hands-on technical expert, driving architecture, development, and deployment of complex AI-powered solutions. Your work will involve architecting end-to-end question answering and multi-agent workflows, integrating with our internal AI platform such as UAIS, and ensuring the responsible and compliant use of AI within a regulated environment, including HIPAA compliance. This role offers the opportunity to work remotely from anywhere within the U.S., with the requirement for candidates in Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. to work in-office at least four days per week. The ideal candidate thrives on solving complex problems at the intersection of AI/ML and distributed systems and is passionate about making a meaningful impact in a mission-driven environment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, IT, or related fields
  • 10+ years of total technology experience
  • 8+ years of hands-on software development, data engineering, or analytics experience with a strong focus on AI/ML delivery (preferably Azure-based) using Scala, Python, or PySpark
  • 4+ years of experience working with Databricks
  • 4+ years of experience with Azure Data Factory (ADF), Airflow, or similar orchestration tools
  • 4+ years of experience with big data technologies and streaming platforms such as Hadoop, MapReduce/HDFS, Spark, Kafka; experience with Docker and Kubernetes
  • 4+ years of experience with MySQL and NoSQL databases
  • 4+ years of experience working within Agile/Scrum methodologies, utilizing GitHub, Jenkins CI/CD, and writing quality code with standards and reviews
  • 2+ years of experience with Large Language Models (LLMs) and Generative AI, including Langchain, LangGraph, RAG, Vector Databases, Azure OpenAI, MCP Server, and Agents
  • 2+ years of experience building containerized services or full-stack applications (e.g., FastAPI/Flask, Node.js, React/Angular, TypeScript, HTML/CSS)
  • Proficiency in building scalable microservices and APIs for enterprise integration
  • Strong understanding of security, privacy, and compliance standards, especially HIPAA and regulated industry controls

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement multi-agent workflows where Large Language Models plan, decompose tasks, invoke tools and APIs, and synthesize answers from heterogeneous data sources and services
  • Build retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and hybrid search pipelines to facilitate robust question answering over clinical and operational data
  • Develop scalable Big Data and cloud solutions, including coding, testing, documenting, and maintaining high-quality systems
  • Create prototypes and conduct design/code reviews to de-risk delivery and enhance engineering quality
  • Leverage and adapt LLMs through prompt engineering, grounding, domain adaptation, and model finetuning to meet healthcare-specific requirements
  • Establish evaluation frameworks to measure model faithfulness, helpfulness, bias, toxicity, privacy leakage, and overall quality, incorporating both automatic and human-in-the-loop assessments
  • Collaborate with data engineering teams to build feature and retrieval stores, embeddings pipelines, and ETL/ELT workflows using Spark/Databricks
  • Define and develop APIs for enterprise-wide integration, optimizing data access for low-latency inference
  • Own MLOps/LLMOps processes, including CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, versioning, lineage, and deployment strategies such as blue/green or canary releases
  • Implement observability, reliability, and cost control measures, including monitoring SLAs, SLIs, latency, and defect rates
  • Ensure security and compliance by integrating access controls, PHI safeguards, encryption, and auditability into AI solutions
  • Partner with legal, compliance, and clinical safety teams to operationalize responsible AI practices
  • Analyze customer requirements, define technical architecture, and contribute to product delivery roadmaps
  • Provide effort estimates, collaborate across teams, document technical processes, and mentor junior engineers to foster continuous learning and improvement
