About The Company

Owner is an AI-native platform designed to empower local business owners, with an initial focus on restaurants. Our innovative system consolidates multiple tools traditionally used to operate a business—such as website management, online ordering, customer relationship management (CRM), point of sale (POS), and marketing—into a single seamless platform. By automating routine tasks and driving demand, Owner enables business owners to focus on delivering exceptional customer experiences. Since our inception in 2020, we have achieved significant traction, generating tens of millions in revenue and processing over a billion dollars in online orders. Our platform is trusted by one in five Americans who have used an Owner.com website, and we have helped over 20,000 restaurant owners save nearly $200 million in fees. Headquartered in San Francisco with a sales hub in Toronto, Owner is a remote-first organization composed of talented professionals from leading SMB-software companies such as Shopify, HubSpot, DoorDash, and Stripe. Our mission is to scale our success beyond restaurants to other local business types, making a meaningful impact in the digital age for millions of entrepreneurs worldwide.

About The Role

We are seeking a highly experienced Backend Engineer to join our team, focusing on the development and maintenance of our core platform, particularly the Grader product—Owner’s free restaurant health report. This role involves owning backend services and data pipelines that power Grader scans from end to end, ensuring reliable ingestion of third-party signals and scalable delivery of results. As a key member of our engineering team, you will work on strengthening the platform’s infrastructure by reducing latency, increasing uptime, and building observability and alerting systems that support our growth. You will establish foundational platform components such as shared abstractions, operational runbooks, and architectural patterns that reduce operational toil and provide a robust base for other engineers. Additionally, you will collaborate closely with product teams, AI developers, and business stakeholders to evolve Grader into a broader AI-powered tool that continues to serve the needs of restaurant owners and other local businesses. This role offers a unique opportunity to impact a fast-growing product at a pioneering company dedicated to transforming local business success through innovative technology.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience owning and operating backend services in production environments
  • Proficiency in building and managing data pipelines, third-party integrations, and asynchronous processing systems at scale
  • Strong track record in improving system reliability through observability, alerting, incident reduction, and operational health management
  • Experience working in product-focused startups or scale-ups with end-to-end system ownership
  • Excellent cross-functional collaboration skills, with a proven ability to work effectively with product, design, and business teams
  • Exceptional communication skills and a proactive approach to problem-solving
  • Hands-on experience with backend technologies such as Node.js and TypeScript
  • Familiarity with databases like MongoDB and PostgreSQL
  • Knowledge of infrastructure and observability tools such as AWS, Datadog, and Temporal

  • Establish and document platform foundations, including shared abstractions, operational runbooks, and architectural patterns
  • Collaborate closely with product teams, AI engineers, and business stakeholders to guide the evolution of Grader into an AI-powered tool
  • Identify operational bottlenecks and proactively implement improvements to enhance system performance and reliability
  • Participate in code reviews, architectural discussions, and strategic planning to ensure best practices are followed
  • Mentor junior engineers and foster a culture of continuous improvement within the engineering team

Benefits

  • Estimated starting base salary of $220,000 to $240,000, commensurate with experience and location
