Overview
VTG is seeking an experienced, mid-career full-stack software engineer to lead technical execution on assigned projects. This role owns significant design and architecture decisions at the intersection of data engineering, full-stack development, and mission analytics, with direct impact on national security and industrial base resilience. You will operate as a senior technical contributor in an agile product environment, driving the architecture of a modern web-based platform that integrates diverse data sources, applies risk scoring across DoD taxonomies, and delivers actionable insights to senior defense stakeholders. This role is expected to mentor junior developers and partner directly with government stakeholders on technical direction.
What will you do?
Architect, design, and lead development of full-stack features
Own front-end architecture using React, establishing patterns and standards for intuitive, data-rich user experiences
Design and build scalable backend services and APIs using Python
Lead integration of structured and unstructured data sources to support supply chain risk analytics
Drive technical planning within an Agile/Scrum team, including sprint planning, backlog grooming, and story estimation using Jira
Establish and enforce code quality standards, conduct code reviews, and maintain CI/CD pipelines using GitLab
Lead data modeling and visualization efforts aligned to DoD risk taxonomies
Serve as a technical lead in requirements refinement, sprint planning, and architecture/design discussions with government stakeholders
Own documentation required for Risk Management Framework (RMF) alignment and auditability
Mentor junior and mid-level developers, providing technical guidance and code review feedback
Identify technical risks and propose mitigation strategies to program leadership
Develop and execute Software Test Plans (STPs) and associated test cases covering unit, integration, system, and regression testing
Perform functional and regression testing to validate new features and confirm defect fixes prior to release
Support debugging and root cause analysis (RCA) of defects identified during testing, staging, or production, partnering with QA and government stakeholders through resolution and closure
Document test results, defect reports, and requirements traceability matrices (RTM) to support test readiness reviews and RMF/audit requirements
Do you have what it takes?
You are a seasoned, technically strong engineer who has shipped production software end-to-end and is ready to take ownership of architecture and technical direction. You are comfortable navigating ambiguity, communicate effectively with both engineers and government stakeholders, and are motivated by building solutions that drive real-world mission outcomes. You bring not just coding skills, but sound engineering judgment, and you enjoy helping less experienced developers grow.
Required
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related technical field (or equivalent experience)
5-8+ years of professional software development experience, including full-stack delivery in production environments
Advanced proficiency in Python for backend development, including API design and service architecture
Demonstrated experience building and architecting front-end applications using React (or similar modern JS frameworks)
Strong command of Git-based version control workflows (GitLab preferred), including branching strategy and release management
Proven experience operating in Agile development environments, including leading sprint ceremonies and using Jira
Track record of leading technical design discussions and making architectural decisions independently
Strong problem-solving skills and demonstrated ability to operate autonomously in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment
Experience authoring and executing Software Test Plans (STPs) and test cases, with working knowledge of unit testing frameworks (e.g., pytest, Jest) and defect tracking/triage using Jira
Desired
Experience architecting solutions in cloud environments (AWS, Azure, or DoD platforms such as DENIX/COSMOS equivalents)
Experience leading data analytics, data pipeline, or visualization efforts (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, or D3.js)
Advanced competency in Bash scripting and Linux systems administration
Experience architecting and deploying web applications using Docker and Docker Compose, or equivalent containerization tools
Deep understanding of efficient design principles in web applications, including lazy loading, optimized rendering, and asset management
Strong grasp of time complexity and computational efficiency, particularly for large datasets and data pipelines
Working knowledge of supply chain, logistics, or risk modeling concepts
Prior experience working in or supporting DoD or federal programs
Familiarity with security practices aligned to RMF or National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) frameworks
Experience mentoring junior engineers or leading a small development team
Experience with test automation frameworks (e.g., Selenium, Cypress, PyTest) and CI/CD-integrated automated regression suites
