Full Stack Developer
Remote (UK) · Full-time · £50,000–£70,000 depending on experience + equity
The role
OpenFront is hiring a full-stack developer who writes code from day one, is an active, visible presence in our Discord community, owns PR review and merging, runs milestone planning, and grows into leading project management for the game.
OpenFront (openfront.io) is a real-time multiplayer browser strategy game with a large, active player community and open-source contributor base, now live in Steam Early Access. This role owns the day-to-day running of the main browser version of the game, so the rest of the team can focus on growing OpenFront across new platforms. The codebase is TypeScript with Lit Elements on the front end, and it’s open source, so you can look around before you apply. The project is run in Linear.
This isn’t a heads-down coding job. The role has three parts: engineering, being the dev team’s voice in the community, and keeping the project moving. That means working through tickets, talking with players on Discord, deciding what gets merged and what ships in each milestone, and making sure the community, contributors and the core team are pulling in the same direction.
What you’ll do
Community and tickets
- Be active in the OpenFront Discord every day: answer questions, join discussions, and be a visible, approachable face of the dev team.
- Read and respond to support tickets and bug reports, get to the bottom of what’s actually happening, and turn real issues into well-written Linear tickets.
- Explain what’s changing and why when updates ship, and handle frustrated players calmly and honestly.
- Bring player feedback back into planning so the community has a real voice in what we build.
Engineering
- Build features and fix bugs across the game client and server in TypeScript, making full use of AI coding tools to move quickly.
- Pick up work from the Linear board and ship it to the agreed milestone.
- Keep the codebase healthy: tests, refactors, and paying down tech debt where it blocks delivery.
PR review and merging
- Review frontend and backend pull requests from the core team and community contributors for correctness, performance, and fit with the game’s direction.
- Merge approved work and keep main stable and releasable.
- Give contributors clear, constructive feedback so good PRs land quickly and weak ones are turned around or closed.
Milestone planning
- Run planning for each milestone: scope it, size it, and agree priorities with the Technical Director and COO.
- Keep Linear accurate: issues triaged, assigned and moving, with blockers raised early.
- Track progress and call slippage before it happens, not after.
Project management (learning, then leading)
- Learn how OpenFront plans and ships, alongside the existing leads.
- Take increasing ownership of release cadence, roadmap upkeep, and coordination between engineering, community and commercial priorities for the browser version.
- In time, lead project management for OpenFront.
How the role grows
- First 30 days: get active in Discord and start handling tickets, ship small fixes and features, learn the codebase, the review standards and the Linear workflow, and shadow milestone planning.
- Days 30–90: own the ticket queue and be a regular dev presence in Discord, review and merge PRs independently, co-run milestone planning with the Technical Director, and own triage of incoming issues.
- Beyond 90 days: run milestone planning end to end, lead release coordination and roadmap upkeep, and act as the main link between the community and the dev team, moving towards leading project management overall.
Timings are a guide.
What we’re looking for
Essential
- You genuinely enjoy talking with players and community members, and you’re comfortable being visible and active in a busy Discord.
- Patient, clear and honest when handling tickets and bug reports, including from frustrated players.
- Solid, shipped fullstack experience, equally comfortable on frontend (UI, client-side game code) and backend (servers, APIs, real-time networking).
- Comfortable reviewing other people’s code across the stack and giving direct, useful feedback.
- Comfortable using AI tools day to day (e.g. Claude Code) for coding, review and planning, and confident judging and owning the quality of what they produce.
- Working knowledge of Git and GitHub: branching, PRs, resolving conflicts, keeping main stable.
- Organised and reliable: you track work, hit the dates you commit to, and flag problems early.
- Running sprints, milestones or releases, and ticket/tracking software.
