We are seeking a Senior Full-Stack Engineer to take end-to-end ownership of the SafariShare platform: database and geospatial matching logic, web and mobile applications, background processing, and production infrastructure. The role suits an engineer who prefers full vertical ownership to specialisation within a single layer.

About SafariShare

SafariShare is a transport marketplace operating across East Africa, providing intercity bus booking, carpooling, daily commutes, private hire and parcel delivery. The platform is live in production and processes customer payments.

Responsibilities

- Design and maintain the geospatial matching system that pairs riders with buses, carpools and commutes, implemented in Postgres and PostGIS

- Design and build the rider and driver web application, deciding how screens look and behave rather than implementing someone else's mockups

- Maintain the back-office used daily by operations staff, where clarity matters more than polish

- Maintain mobile money payment flows: initiation, polling, reconciliation, wallets and receipting

- Operate background job processing, transactional SMS, and infrastructure as code

- Contribute to the React Native application

Requirements

- Five or more years building and operating production web applications

- Advanced PostgreSQL: query planning, indexing, transactions, and migrations suitable for live data

- Advanced TypeScript and React

- Design taste, and the skills to act on it: layout, typography, spacing and mobile-first behaviour, with a portfolio of interfaces you designed rather than only implemented

- Experience with queue-based architectures, Docker and Linux

- A record of delivering software with a high degree of autonomy

Much of this platform's business logic, including matching, ranking and geospatial computation, is implemented in SQL rather than in application code, so advanced PostgreSQL is the primary technical requirement.

There is no designer here, and there will not be one for a while. The same person who writes the matching query decides what the result looks like on a mid-range Android phone on a slow connection. We are looking for someone who cares how the product looks and feels, and whose work reads as considered rather than assembled from defaults. This is a genuine second requirement, not a bonus.

Preferred: row-level security, payment reconciliation, mobile money or USSD, React Native, infrastructure-as-code. Our stack is TypeScript, Next.js, Supabase, Node and Expo; direct experience with it is not expected, and no degree is required.

Working practices

A significant proportion of development is carried out with AI-assisted tooling under human review. Candidates should be comfortable reviewing generated code critically and accountable for what is merged.

Process and terms

Four stages over roughly two weeks: an introductory conversation, a take-home project on Supabase timeboxed to about four hours, a walkthrough of what you submitted, and a closing conversation with the founder. The brief is published in full, so you can decide whether the work appeals before you apply: safarishare.com/engineering/challenge

Salary is competitive and discussed at the first conversation, alongside equity commensurate with the scope of the role. Remote, with overlap required with East Africa Time.

To apply

Send two links: a system you have built and operated in production, and an interface you designed yourself. Screenshots are fine if the second one is not public. Tell us in a line what you were going for with the design.
