Reporting to the Technical Director, the Back-End / Full Stack Developer is responsible for designing, developing and maintaining custom software solutions that support Float4's immersive and interactive projects. 


Working closely with the Creative, Technology and Production teams, this role contributes to technical architecture, web application and CMS development, API integrations, deployment pipelines and R&D initiatives. The successful candidate will participate throughout the project lifecycle, from technical planning and prototyping to deployment and on-site integration, while also providing technical oversight and direction to external development partners to ensure solutions are delivered according to Float4's standards, requirements and objectives.


MANDATORY ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

This is a hybrid role based in Montreal, requiring on-site presence at our studio three days per week. Applicants must be currently based in Quebec and legally authorized to work in Canada at the time of application. 


Candidates must also have a minimum of three years of professional experience developing back-end systems for interactive multimedia installations or immersive technology projects.

RESPONSIBILITIES


SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT

  • Design, develop, test and maintain scalable back-end and full-stack applications
  • Develop custom software solutions, plugins, APIs and integrations supporting Float4 productions
  • Build and maintain Content Management Systems (CMS) and web-based tools for clients and internal teams
  • Develop data-driven applications, dashboards and content delivery systems
  • Create reusable frameworks, libraries and components to improve development efficiency across projects
  • Contribute to the development of mobile-ready and web-based interactive experiences, including WebAR and Web3D applications
  • Contribute to the integration of software with rendering engines, media servers, hardware devices, sensors and third-party systems
  • Optimize software performance and reliability for production environments
  • Collaborate with Production and Technical leadership to plan, prioritize and oversee development activities performed by external resources
  • Coordinate, supervise and review the work of external developers, ensure alignment with project goals, coding standards and development best practices
  • Build prototypes and proof-of-concepts to validate technical approaches and production strategies


SOLUTION ARCHITECTURE

  • Under the Technical Director’s supervision:
  • If needed, participate in project planning and technical discovery phases
  • Assess feasibility, identify project risks and recommend appropriate solutions and technologies
  • Define software architectures and development strategies for interactive and web-based projects
  • Estimate development effort and contribute to project scoping and planning
  • Evaluate third-party technologies, platforms and integrations


WEB PLATFORM & CMS DEVELOPMENT

  • Design and implement modern web application architectures
  • Define and maintain common technology stacks, coding standards and development practices for web-based projects
  • Develop and maintain shared application foundations, frameworks and deployment environments
  • Build systems capable of integrating multiple data sources, media servers, sensors and external APIs
  • Support initiatives to bring larger software and CMS projects in-house


DEV OPS, INFRASTRUCTURE & DEPLOYMENT

  • Configure and maintain development, staging and production environments
  • Implement and manage CI/CD pipelines and deployment workflows
  • Manage cloud infrastructure, servers, networking and application hosting
  • Monitor application performance, reliability and security
  • Plan and execute software deployments, updates and release processes
  • Ensure software solutions comply with security and operational best practices


INTERACTIVE & REAL-TIME TECHNOLOGIES

  • Collaborate with developers, technical artists and production teams to support immersive experiences
  • Explore technologies related to real-time rendering, 3D visualization, WebGL, shaders, lighting systems and media playback pipelines
  • Contribute to projects involving data visualization, interactive content delivery and multimedia systems
  • Support software integration during on-site installations and commissioning phases


QUALITY ASSURANCE

  • Write clean, maintainable and well-documented code
  • Conduct code reviews and provide recommendations regarding performance, scalability, stability and security
  • Perform testing, debugging and troubleshooting throughout the project lifecycle
  • Identify opportunities for optimization and continuous improvement
  • Resolve issues affecting existing applications and deployed projects


RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT

  • Participate in Float4's R&D and technology exploration initiatives
  • Stay informed about emerging technologies, frameworks, development practices and industry trends
  • Evaluate new tools and approaches that could improve project quality, efficiency or capabilities
  • Share knowledge and contribute to the technical growth of the team


OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

Occasional travel may be required.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS 

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience in back-end or full-stack software development
  • Advanced knowledge of JavaScript/TypeScript and modern web development practices
  • Experience with Node.js and API development
  • Experience designing and developing web applications and content management systems
  • Strong understanding of software architecture, multithreading, networking and performance optimization
  • Experience working with relational and/or NoSQL databases
  • Experience with Git-based version control workflows
  • Experience working on interactive installations, media systems, or immersive experiences
  • Fluency in French and English, spoken and written
  • English is required to collaborate with English-speaking partners and external resources, and to review and prepare documentation and project communications in English, as needed.


ASSETS

  • Proficiency in C++ and object-oriented programming
  • Experience with React, Next.js, Vue, or similar front-end frameworks
  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, or containerized environments
  • Experience with AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices
  • Experience with REST APIs, WebSockets, TCP/IP, UDP, OSC, or real-time communication protocols
  • Experience with Python, PHP, Go, or other back-end languages
  • Familiarity with Unity, Unreal Engine, TouchDesigner, WebGL, Three.js, or real-time 3D technologies
  • Knowledge of rendering pipelines, shaders, materials, lighting, simulation, or visual effects workflows
