Company: Surgical XR
Website: surgicalxr.com
Location: Australia — Remote
Engagement: Full-time remote (Australia only)
Surgical XR is building an AI-enhanced medical video and collaboration platform for proceduralists, surgeons, hospitals, and emergency medical services.
Our platform helps clinical teams stream, record, review, and collaborate around complex medical procedures in real time. Today, we support use cases across operating theatres, procedure rooms, and remote proctoring environments. We are now expanding the same core technology into emergency medical services, enabling ambulance and pre-hospital care teams to connect with specialists, hospitals, and support teams in real time.
By improving access to expertise, enhancing training, supporting clinical decision-making, and creating better procedural records, Surgical XR is working to improve patient outcomes across the entire care journey — from the ambulance to the operating theatre.
As we expand within Australia and internationally, we are looking for a Frontend Engineer with strong experience in Next.js, TypeScript, React, and AWS to join us at the ground level.
The Role
You will work closely with the product and engineering team to design, build, and improve the frontend experience across Surgical XR’s platform.
This includes products for operating theatres, procedure rooms, remote proctoring workflows, and emergency medical services. You will help build interfaces that clinicians rely on in high-pressure, real-world medical environments, where usability, reliability, performance, and security matter.
This is a hands-on product engineering role suited to someone who enjoys taking ownership, solving complex problems, and shipping high-quality features quickly in response to real customer needs.
Responsibilities
- Develop maintainable, high-quality frontend code using React, TypeScript, and Next.js.
- Transform complex clinical and operational requirements into simple, elegant, and performant user experiences.
- Own frontend features end-to-end, from technical planning through to implementation and release.
- Work across products used in theatres, procedure rooms, remote proctoring workflows, and emergency medical services.
- Collaborate closely with product, design, clinical, and engineering stakeholders to shape new features.
- Build interfaces for live video, case management, scheduling, user permissions, clinical workflows, and real-time collaboration.
- Work with AWS-based infrastructure and services as part of the broader Surgical XR platform.
- Use AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code, ChatGPT, Cursor, or similar tools to improve speed, quality, and problem-solving.
- Take initiative in identifying problems, proposing improvements, and shipping solutions without waiting to be told exactly what to do.
- Move quickly to deliver features, improvements, and fixes that create the best possible customer and clinical user experience.
- Help define and maintain frontend architecture, design patterns, and reusable component systems.
- Contribute to code reviews, testing, performance improvements, and frontend best practices.
- Support a security-conscious engineering culture, particularly around sensitive medical data and clinical workflows.
- Help foster a culture of continuous learning, pragmatic decision-making, and high product quality.
Qualifications
- 2+ years of professional software engineering experience.
- Advanced experience with TypeScript, React, and modern frontend architecture.
- Strong experience with Next.js or similar modern React frameworks.
- Familiarity with AWS and cloud-based application infrastructure.
- Experience building production-grade web applications used by real customers.
- Comfortable using AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code, ChatGPT, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, or similar.
- Familiarity with modern build tools, CI/CD pipelines, testing, and deployment workflows.
- Ability to work independently in a remote startup environment.
- Strong product thinking and an ability to balance technical quality with speed of execution.
- Bachelor-level qualification in software engineering or a related field is preferred, but equivalent practical experience will also be considered.
- Experience with MongoDB, WebRTC, video streaming, or real-time applications is a plus.
Personal Attributes
- Proactive, self-directed, and comfortable taking ownership from problem definition through to delivery.
- Keen to adopt and experiment with AI tools to improve engineering velocity and quality.
- Comfortable shipping quickly, learning from customer feedback, and iterating toward better outcomes.
- Security-focused mindset with a strong commitment to protecting sensitive data and platform integrity.
- Comfortable working in a dynamic, fast-paced startup environment.
- Product-minded, practical, and able to make thoughtful trade-offs.
- Strong attention to detail while still being able to move fast when needed.
- Clear communicator who can work closely with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Team-oriented, humble, and motivated by building products that have real-world impact.
- Comfortable working on software that may be used in high-stakes clinical and emergency environments.
Bonus Attributes
- Experience building live video, WebRTC, real-time collaboration, or multi-device streaming products.
- Experience with AI or machine learning features in production software.
- Experience working across multiple programming languages.
- Familiarity with privacy, security, or compliance requirements in healthcare environments.
- Interest in improving healthcare delivery, surgical training, emergency response, and patient outcomes.
Why Surgical XR?
- Work on meaningful technology used in real clinical environments.
- Help shape products across operating theatres, hospitals, and emergency medical services.
- Join at an early stage with the opportunity to have significant product and technical influence.
- Use modern AI-assisted development workflows to build faster and smarter.
- Grow with the company as we expand in Australia and internationally.
- Work remotely with a flexible, focused, and ambitious team.
- Contribute to a platform designed to improve access to expertise, clinical training, procedural quality, and patient outcomes.
