About The Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Software Engineer to join our team on a contract basis, working approximately 10-15 hours per week remotely. This role is ideal for experienced developers who excel at reasoning through unfamiliar codebases, articulating engineering decisions clearly, and tackling practical backend, full-stack, systems, or infrastructure challenges. The successful candidate will play a critical role in training and evaluating next-generation AI systems by performing real-world software engineering tasks that test and improve AI models’ capabilities. While prior AI experience is not necessary, a strong foundation in software engineering judgment, code analysis, and technical communication is essential. A background or exposure to cybersecurity or security operations is highly preferred, as it aligns with our focus on building secure, reliable AI systems.

Qualifications

Candidates should possess at least five years of hands-on software engineering experience, demonstrating proficiency in at least one backend or full-stack environment such as Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, Node.js, Java, C#, .NET, C++, Go, Ruby, or PHP. Experience in developing, maintaining, or reviewing production-level applications, APIs, services, databases, or integrations is required. A solid understanding of core software engineering principles—including debugging, testing, architecture, and technical tradeoffs—is critical. The ability to clearly explain complex engineering decisions and to quickly adapt to unfamiliar codebases or technical requirements is a must. Preferred qualifications include experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure), CI/CD pipelines, DevOps workflows, containerization, monitoring, frontend frameworks (React, Next.js, Angular, Vue), open-source contributions, and experience mentoring or reviewing code.

Responsibilities

  • Work on challenging software engineering tasks across backend, full-stack, infrastructure, and systems projects, contributing to the development and evaluation of AI training data and models.
  • Review, debug, optimize, and explain code across various technical environments, ensuring high standards of quality and performance.
  • Design or evaluate practical solutions involving APIs, databases, microservices, integrations, testing frameworks, and deployment workflows to support AI training and evaluation processes.
  • Identify and analyze tradeoffs related to scalability, maintainability, performance, reliability, security, and developer experience, providing clear technical recommendations.
  • Communicate complex technical reasoning effectively in written form, including rationale for solutions and consideration of alternative approaches.
  • Collaborate closely with customer teams during technical reviews, implementation planning, and problem-solving exercises to ensure alignment and quality outcomes.
  • Quickly adapt to new codebases, frameworks, and evolving technical requirements, maintaining flexibility and a proactive approach to problem-solving.

Benefits

Though this is a contractor role, micro1 offers a flexible remote work environment that allows you to balance your professional and personal commitments. You will have the opportunity to work on cutting-edge AI projects that have a meaningful impact on the future of technology. This position provides exposure to diverse technical challenges across multiple domains, fostering continuous learning and skill development. Additionally, you will be part of a forward-thinking organization dedicated to innovation, collaboration, and the application of expertise to solve real-world problems in AI. While compensation is project-based, the experience gained and the impact made can be substantial for your professional growth.

Equal Opportunity
