About Afternoon

Afternoon is building the operating system for modern financial advice firms. We are replacing fragmented systems and manual processes with one AI- and data-first platform that helps firms work faster, deliver better advice and serve more clients.

At the heart of Afternoon is a genuinely difficult technical problem. We connect investment data from 27 platforms with client records, documents, meetings and communications, then use AI to turn that information into dependable, source-attributed outputs. Firms can prepare for meetings, capture and structure conversations, maintain client records, create complex advice reports and communicate with clients in one connected system.

Our growth over the past year has been strong. We are working with a rapidly growing number of advice firms, have a live B2B partnership with a UK bank and are increasingly being recognised across the market. Afternoon won the lang cat's Advicetech Catwalk 2026, voted for by more than 150 advisers, and was named Professional Services Start-up of the Year for Scotland at the UK StartUp Awards. We were also selected for J.P. Morgan's Fintech Forward 2026 programme.

The opportunity

This is an opportunity to join Afternoon at the point where the product is proven, momentum is building and there is still enormous scope to influence what comes next. We are looking for a product-minded software engineer who is comfortable working across the full stack. You will help develop and operate the system that connects complex financial data, client records, documents, meetings and AI-powered workflows.

You will work closely with our CTO, data-science team and product colleagues, contribute to important technical decisions and own work from discovery through to production. You will see customers use what you build and help establish the engineering foundations for the next stage of our growth. The role suits someone who cares about user experience and software quality, enjoys solving ambiguous problems and can balance pace with the security and reliability expected in regulated financial services.

What you will do

• Design, build and improve product features across our React front end and Python back end.
• Develop reliable services and APIs backed by PostgreSQL and integrated with external data and productivity platforms.
• Build responsive, accessible interfaces that make complex client and investment information easy to understand and use.
• Work with product, data science and customers to understand problems, test assumptions and ship useful solutions.
• Integrate AI and machine-learning capabilities into dependable user workflows, with appropriate review, traceability and controls.
• Maintain infrastructure on AWS using Terraform and contribute to observability, performance, resilience and cost management.
• Work confidently with customers to understand their needs, translate them into clear technical problems and help bridge the gap between customer requirements and product development.
• Deliver clean, maintainable, well-tested software, using AI and other development tools where appropriate while taking full responsibility for the quality of the output.
• Review code, improve engineering practices and help the team make sound technical decisions as the platform scales.
• Investigate production issues, communicate clearly and follow problems through to resolution.

What we are looking for

• Strong software-engineering fundamentals and experience shipping production software.
• Experience building modern web applications with React and TypeScript or JavaScript.
• Experience with Python or a similar programming language, along with a modern back-end framework such as FastAPI, Django, Flask, or an equivalent framework in another language.
• Strong initiative and the confidence to work independently, make progress and bring people in when their input is needed
• A sound understanding of API design, relational data modelling and PostgreSQL or a similar database.
• Experience with automated testing and a practical approach to quality.
• Familiarity with cloud infrastructure and deployment, ideally AWS and infrastructure as code.
• The ability to take ownership, communicate trade-offs and collaborate well across technical and non-technical teams.
• Comfort working in a startup where priorities evolve and people contribute beyond narrow role boundaries.

Useful additional experience

You do not need to have all of these, but any of the following would be valuable:

• Building products that use LLMs, retrieval, structured generation or machine-learning services.
• Working with document processing, financial data, integrations or data-heavy workflow products.
• Security, privacy, auditability or compliance requirements in regulated environments.
• Terraform, CI and CD pipelines, monitoring and production operations.
• Early-stage product development and direct collaboration with customers.
