Software Development Engineer

About SprintHive

SprintHive is a leading South African fintech dedicated to delivering innovative, end-to-end customer onboarding services. Our solutions are designed to drive conversion rates, mitigate fraud, and reduce operational costs through automation. We take pride in our ability to facilitate full customer onboarding in under two minutes, providing our clients with seamless and secure implementation.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a Software Development Engineer to join our high-performing engineering team. At SprintHive, we operate on a foundation of mutual trust and close collaboration. While our team is primarily remote, we maintain a hybrid model that allows for in-person collaboration when strategically required.

From day one, you will be integrated into various facets of the business, balancing your time between core product development and client solutions. We provide our engineers with the autonomy to innovate and the resources necessary to achieve excellence.

Key Responsibilities

  • End-to-End Ownership: Manage the full software development lifecycle, from initial architectural design to production deployment and maintenance.
  • Engineering Excellence: Execute tasks independently with team support, ensuring all work aligns with modern security practices and robust architectural patterns.
  • Customer-Centricity: Prioritise the end-user experience in all technical decisions, ensuring solutions are optimised for both performance and usability.
  • Operational Accountability: Participate in the on-call rotation, addressing technical debt and managing operational incidents to ensure system reliability.
  • Collaborative Design: Contribute to software and broader architectural discourse. We value engineers who challenge existing paradigms and commit fully to a chosen direction once a consensus is reached.
  • Quality Assurance: Conduct objective, professional code reviews and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement by being receptive to peer feedback.
  • Continuous Integration: Maintain comprehensive automated testing within CI/CD pipelines and ensure all technical documentation is accurate and current.

Preferred Qualification/Certifications:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification (such as a Diploma or Degree in Computer Science or a related technical field) is preferred, with a BSc in Computer Science/ Information Technology, considered a distinct advantage.
  • 3–5 years of professional experience in software engineering, ideally within a cloud-native or microservices-based environment, with experience in the Fintech or Payments sector being highly valued due to our regulatory and security requirements.
  • A proven track record of shipping production-ready code, supported by a GitHub portfolio or professional history that demonstrates your ability to work with event-driven architectures and complex business logic.
  • A commitment to continuous learning, where evidence of self-driven professional development and relevant cloud certifications, such as Google Cloud Professional Developer, AWS Certified Developer etc. are highly regarded.

Technical Requirements

The successful candidate will work within a sophisticated microservice architecture utilising Event Sourcing and CQRS. Our stack includes:

  • Languages: Kotlin, Python, and JavaScript (with exposure to Golang).
  • Frameworks: Spring Boot.
  • Infrastructure: Kubernetes (GKE), Terraform (Infrastructure-as-Code), and NoSQL databases.
  • Monitoring & Logging: Prometheus, Grafana, Elastic, and Kibana.
  • Environment: Linux or macOS development environments.

We are looking for a professional who demonstrates:

  • An analytical mindset with the ability to think deeply about complex problems.
  • The ability to communicate progress and blockers proactively.
  • A commitment to sharing knowledge and fostering a collaborative environment.
  • A strong sense of curiosity regarding the "why" behind technical and business decisions.

If you are looking to advance your career within a fast-growing fintech that values autonomy, we invite you to apply.
