About The Role
The Trust and Risk, Fraud, and Integrity teams at Whatnot are dedicated to creating systems that promote a safe, trustworthy environment for all users. This role involves designing and implementing scalable, high-performance platforms that enforce platform policies, detect abuse, and resolve disputes efficiently. The ideal candidate will focus on proactive detection methods, leveraging machine learning and behavioral analysis to stay ahead of evolving abuse patterns. They will develop event-driven pipelines for real-time threat response, contribute to all phases of the development lifecycle, and collaborate across multiple product and operational teams. Continuous evolution of defenses against new abuse vectors is essential, requiring a proactive approach to security and integrity. This position offers flexibility for remote work or working from one of the company’s global hubs, with the expectation that team members reside within commuting distance of hubs in Seattle, New York City, San Francisco, or Los Angeles.

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Economics, or a related technical field, or equivalent work experience
- 7+ years of total software engineering experience
- 4+ years of experience building for consumer-scale loads
- 1+ years of experience writing production code in Python
- 1+ years of experience in Trust, Risk, Integrity, or Fraud domains (preferred)
- Experience with data warehouses and transformation tools such as Snowflake, dbt, and Dagster
- Strong business intuition and a data-driven mindset
- Excellent communication and documentation skills
- Ability to work autonomously and lead cross-functional initiatives
- Comfortable collaborating in a remote environment
- Experience with machine learning, behavioral analysis, or related fields (a plus)
- Design and develop systems to protect the platform by building scalable algorithms and infrastructure to mitigate systemic risks
- Implement policies and dispute resolution mechanisms to enforce behavioral standards
- Build and maintain event-driven pipelines for real-time detection and response to high-risk behaviors
- Balance risk mitigation efforts with user experience to minimize friction for trusted users
- Engage in all phases of the development lifecycle, including ideation, prototyping, load testing, deployment, and monitoring
- Collaborate across multiple teams to surface insights, develop dashboards, and communicate findings to leadership
- Continuously refine and evolve detection methods to stay ahead of emerging abuse patterns
- Contribute to the development of resilient, high-performance detection and prevention solutions
