About Dr Frost Learning

Dr Frost Learning is an education charity whose mission is to ensure every student, regardless of background, feels capable in maths and every teacher loves teaching it. Our platform supports the teaching and learning of mathematics from KS2 to A Level, and is used by tens of thousands of teachers and hundreds of thousands of students across the UK and internationally, both through schools and independently.

As we grow our subscriber base towards 2,000 schools, we are building the engineering team to match our ambitions.

Our brand recognition is exceptionally strong, and our charitable status sets us apart from commercial competitors. As we enter our fourth year as a charity, our priority is to deepen platform engagement — particularly in schools serving students from disadvantaged backgrounds — and to grow our subscription base as we transition from philanthropic funding to a full subscription model.

The Role

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join a small, high-ownership engineering team working on one of the UK's most widely used maths education platforms. You will work closely with the CTO and Product Manager to design, build and maintain features that directly affect how students learn and how teachers teach. This is a hands-on role — you will be writing code every day, taking broad ownership across the stack, and contributing to technical direction in a team where every engineer matters. If you thrive in lean, fast-moving environments where you can see the direct impact of your work, and want to be part of a mission/vision driven organisation, this role is for you.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and build new platform features from requirements through to production release, working across our ReactJS front-end and PHP back-end
  • Take ownership of significant parts of the codebase with a focus on quality and long-term maintainability
  • Collaborate closely with the CTO and Product Manager on scoping, technical feasibility and delivery
  • Contribute to architectural decisions and help shape the technical direction of the platform
  • Work with the QA Automation Engineer to maintain testing standards and ensure reliable releases
  • Identify and address technical debt pragmatically, balancing it against feature delivery
  • Jump in on urgent engineering issues when the team needs it — this is a small team and everyone pulls together

What We Are Looking For

Essential

  • Proven experience as a senior software engineer, ideally in a product-led or SaaS environment
  • Strong full-stack skills with hands-on experience in React, ReactRouter and PHP
  • Experience working in small, agile teams where engineers take broad ownership
  • A pragmatic approach to technical decisions — you care about doing things well without over-engineering
  • Comfortable working remotely and managing your own time effectively
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted development and an interest in applying it appropriately

Desirable

  • Experience with cloud infrastructure, ideally Google Cloud
  • Background in edtech or consumer-facing products at scale
  • Familiarity with maths notation, question rendering or assessment tooling
  • A genuine passion for education and the belief that every student deserves access to quality maths teaching

Experience

5+ years in a senior software engineering role, with demonstrable experience working on production systems used by large numbers of users.

What We Offer

  • £100,000+ salary depending on experience, with pension and salary sacrifice
  • 25 days holiday plus bank holidays
  • Fully remote working with the option of using our London co-working space

How to Apply

To apply, please send a CV and a cover letter of up to two pages outlining your interest, suitability for the role and how you meet the requirements. Please indicate your current salary, notice period and availability. Applications should be submitted to jobs@drfrost.org.

Diversity and Inclusion

We care about diversity and inclusion and are committed to building a diverse and inclusive team. Applicants from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
