About The Role
As a Staff Software Engineer (m/f/d), you will play a critical role in shaping and maintaining our full-stack teleophthalmology platform. You will be responsible for making complex, unclear, or broken systems manageable, ensuring our platform remains fast, reliable, and scalable for international expansion. This is an individual contributor position with no direct reports, where you will exercise
technical authority by setting architectural direction and engineering best practices. You will work across the entire technology stack—
frontend,
backend,
data, and
cloud infrastructure (AWS)—to deliver high-quality, operable, and auditable solutions. Your expertise will drive improvements in
testing strategies, tooling, and development processes, enabling the team to deliver features efficiently while maintaining high standards of quality and compliance, including ISO standards relevant to medical device software.
Qualifications
- Seven or more years of professional software engineering experience, particularly with systems reaching real users
- Deep hands-on expertise across the full technology stack, including frontend, backend, and infrastructure
- Strong proficiency in TypeScript with well-formed, defendable opinions on best practices
- Experience working on scalable, reliable systems in a fast-paced environment
- Background in product-focused development, prioritizing user experience and operational stability
- Fluent English language skills (C1 level); German language skills are a plus
- Experience in start-ups or scale-ups where speed and quality are both critical
- Ability to take ownership and shape processes in undefined or evolving environments
- Degree in a STEM field or equivalent practical experience
- Exposure to regulated software, medical devices, or health data is advantageous
Responsibilities
- Own and evolve the architecture of our full-stack platform, including frontend, backend, data, and AWS infrastructure
- Shape and implement testing strategies, balancing unit, integration, and end-to-end coverage to ensure fast, reliable tests
- Drive engineering practices forward by developing tooling, guardrails, and testing disciplines that increase velocity without sacrificing quality
- Collaborate with product teams to define scope, balancing minimal viable solutions with long-term sustainability
- Ensure that all shipped features are operable and auditable by design, complying with standards such as ISO 27001 and ISO 13485
- Address and resolve scaling bottlenecks, broken integrations, and system issues promptly and effectively
- Participate in setting technical direction and best practices, influencing the team’s engineering culture
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, process shaping, and documentation
