About The Role
Syms Strategic Group is seeking a highly skilled Senior Software Developer to join its dynamic team remotely. This full-time role is within the Veterans Affairs (VA) department and is pivotal in building, supporting, and migrating a cloud-based Web Dashboard application that processes healthcare Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) transactions. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in back-end development, API design, and front-end integration, particularly with Angular and cloud services such as AWS. This position offers an excellent opportunity to work on mission-critical healthcare projects, contributing to the modernization of healthcare data exchange and improving the quality of care for veterans. The role requires a proactive individual capable of collaborating across teams, ensuring high-quality code, and adhering to best practices within an Agile framework.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will possess a minimum of 8+ years of professional experience in software development, with a strong focus on back-end technologies such as Java and/or NodeJS. A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field is required. Proven expertise in designing and consuming RESTful APIs, especially within healthcare or enterprise environments, is essential. Familiarity with structured healthcare data formats like X.12 EDI transactions (837, 834, 277, etc.) and experience working with healthcare payer systems or clearinghouses are highly desirable. Candidates should have hands-on experience with Angular, cloud services (AWS preferred), version control tools like Git/GitHub, and testing frameworks such as JUnit or Jest. Strong communication skills, the ability to work independently in a remote setting, and U.S. citizenship are mandatory for this role. Additional preferred qualifications include experience with containerization, healthcare compliance standards (HIPAA), and familiarity with C#/.Net back-end services for cross-team integration.
Responsibilities
The Senior Software Developer will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining a cloud-based Web Dashboard application that handles healthcare EDI transactions. Key duties include building and supporting RESTful APIs in Java and NodeJS that retrieve, transform, and serve structured healthcare data, ensuring high performance and reliability. The developer will integrate these APIs with internal platform services, EDI processing pipelines, and data stores, supporting both live and historical data access. Supporting and enhancing an Angular-based front-end dashboard is also a core aspect, involving API consumption, component development, and data accuracy verification. Collaboration with back-end C#/.Net engineers and AWS data engineers to define API contracts, troubleshoot issues, and optimize data delivery is essential. The role involves writing clean, testable code, conducting unit and integration testing, and supporting deployment and monitoring activities on AWS.
